Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells made of silicon. When the sun’s rays hit them, these cells convert sunlight to electricity. Individual cells are wired together to form a solar panel. Panels are typically 2 meters by 1 meter. They are coated in tempered glass, which allows them to withstand harsh weather.

The electricity produced by a single solar panel is not enough to power a home or business, so multiple solar panels are needed as per the requirement.

Since most of the electrical appliances use AC, this system has an inverter which converts DC to AC.

Once electricity is produced by the solar panels and converted from DC to AC by the inverter(s), it flows through your electric meter and into your home or building. It will be used on-site the moment it is created. Any excess will flow back out through your electric meter and onto the local grid.

In a solar rooftop system, the solar panels are installed on the roof of any residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. This can be of three types (i) Solar Rooftop System with storage facility using a battery, and (ii) Grid Connected Solar Rooftop System (iii) Hybrid Solar system.

Such rooftop system has a battery for a storage facility. The solar electricity is stored in the battery and can be utilized during the night when the sun is not available.

A grid-connected solar PV (photovoltaic) system is connected to both the grid and the solar panels. In the daytime when Solar PV system is producing electricity, it is used to power loads of the building. In the case of excess generation, it is sent to the grid, which acts as a virtual battery. In the night, when there is no solar generation, the power stored in the grid can be used. In case of additional requirement, excess electricity can also be taken from the grid.

Solar PV systems are durable and have a long life. Solar Panels come with a performance warranty of 25 years.

Generation from Solar PV system depends on the light intensity available. The generation will be relatively lower on a cloudy day, but the system will work fine.

Hybrid and off-grid solar PV systems work during power cuts. However, grid-tied/on-grid systems do not generate solar power during power cuts due to the mandatory anti-islanding feature.

It can be installed on the roof of houses, hospitals, schools, industrial sheds, malls, office buildings, apartment complexes, educational institutes etc.

A shadow free area of 100sq.ft will be required for installing 1kW rooftop system.

Net metering is a benefit by which we can export or store excess energy generated from the solar PV system to grid. For example, if the solar PV system generates 100 units during the daytime, and only 80 units are used, then the remaining 20 units can be exported to the grid. This can be used back during the night time when there is no solar generation. If it is not used, then the electricity supplier will buy this power and pay you for this.

It takes about 2-4 weeks to install a smaller system and about 4-8 weeks for larger systems. However, the actual construction time at the site is much lower since almost half of the time is spent on off-site activities such as design, engineering, procurement, etc. In certain cases, there may be variations to these timelines on account of access to the site, rains, etc.

For net metering and gross metering facility, certain approvals need to be taken from the electricity provider for grid connectivity. However, no approvals are required for off-grid systems.

A Solar PV system generally weighs 20 Kg per square meter. This weight can be easily borne by most roofs. Since the life of a Solar PV system is about 25 years or more, do ensure that your roof is in good condition to bear the system’s load over its lifetime.

Yes. But it will be minimal. If you have installed solar to take care of your complete electricity requirement, then you will receive a bill from electricity provider only with the demand charges(fixed charges).
